Ballet flats and clogs: false friends of comfort
False friends in our shoe closet: decoding the illusions of comfort
Shoes that promise comfort and physical well-being can sometimes be misleading. Some, proudly displaying the banner of comfort, actually conceal insidious flaws that harm our feet.
Birkenstock-style sandals and clogs
Birkenstock-style sandals and clogs, with their cork soles, are often praised for their relative comfort. However, their design can be problematic. The pre-molded sole doesn't adapt to the shape of each foot, forcing the feet to conform to a shape that isn't necessarily right for them. These sandals and clogs also require considerable effort to keep in place, stretching the toes forward. Their inadequate support leads to repetitive clicking and irritation.
Furthermore, their sand-walking-inspired design can be misleading: our feet are made to adapt to various terrains, not soft, unstable sand. Finally, the slightly negative heel resulting from the sand-walking footprint doesn't reflect how we walk on the hard surfaces we typically use and can cause excessive stretching of the Achilles tendon and calf muscles. Heels that are too low throw the body off balance just as much as high heels.
Ballerinas
Ballet flats, popularized by Audrey Hepburn and Brigitte Bardot in the late 1950s, are appealing for their lightness and freedom of movement. However, their lack of support can also cause problems. Because the upper barely covers the joints, let alone the instep, the toes curl to hold the heel in place. This lack of support, leading to cramped feet, can contribute to the development of claw toes. Their often overly flexible soles don't provide sufficient support and can cause heel pain.
Choose consciously
It is therefore essential not to rely on appearances, to choose your shoes carefully and to diversify the models worn day after day.
Our feet are the pillars of our body. It is essential to protect them and provide them with shoes that respect their anatomy and function. Elegance is not limited to appearance; it also encompasses well-being and the aura we project as a result.
