Start with the label: "leather" applies only to an animal hide, while "faux leather", "PU" or "vegan leather" refer to synthetic or composite materials. Then look at the grain: genuine leather has a slightly irregular grain, never repeated identically like a printed pattern. Finally, the cut edge of leather shows dense fibres, whereas a coated material reveals a textile backing.

Smooth leather or suede: what is the difference?

Smooth leather keeps the grain of the hide, its natural surface: it develops a patina and is nourished with balm. Suede is obtained by sanding the inner side of the hide, which gives it its velvety touch.
